Wolfenstein Still Coming, Slips to Summer 2009

As shooter fans, we have been eagerly following the development of the latest Wolfenstein project by Raven Soft. After a flurry of initial hype, we didn’t hear anything more about this open-world shooter, which is being published by Activision-Blizzard. Last night during the company’s fourth quarter financial conference call, Activision confirmed that Wolfenstein will still be coming to consoles this year, but the release date has slipped to summer 2009. The title will release for the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 platforms.

The story so far sounds intriguing: Nazis are working to open a portal to another dimension, called “The Veil”. B.J. Blazkowicz is back to thwart their supernatural meddlings, but in order of do so, he must adopt some otherworldly skills himself. B.J. will reportedly gain some special abilities, such as the power to open up his own portals to venture into the Veil. A number of weapons will also lean toward the fantastical. One of the first weapons that Raven Soft has revealed is a lightning gun that allows B.J. to literally electrocute foes into dust.

The game will take place in a large, open German city. In between story missions, players will be able to accomplish side quests and even team up with members of the resistance to disrupt the Nazis’ plans.

We hope that the delay gives Raven some much-needed time to polish up their highly-anticipated entry into this classic franchise.
