This months Game Informer showcased a first look at the latest story arc to the Highlander legacy. Some of you might remember the movies and TV series through the years; especially the famous line, “There can be only one!” Then you lose your head and all the power you possessed. As brutal as that sounds, it made a good reason to stay on holy ground.

The story is not about Duncan or Connor this time, but a whole new character that is a thousand years older than the original immortals. His name is Owen MacLeod and please don’t be fooled by his last name. He might have the surname of the Macleod clan, but he has no blood ties with them. He was adopted into the clan when he fought along side those many years ago. I find his particularly fascinating because his first death dates back to the destruction of Pompeii. Why is that interesting you ask? Well in the series a watcher explains that when immortals fight on holy ground something earth shattering happens. The first immortals to break this rule were in 79 A.D which cause the event of Pompeii’s destruction. If that connects to Owen in the video games story I will be even more impressed.

There will be times where you do flash back into Owen’s past events and battles to learn more about how he became such and powerful immortal. However this story is based in the future of New York City, so expect some futuristic environments and locales. The combat system is very impressive where you are able to choose what attributes and style of combat with your character and incorporate that with the buttons. Magic will be involved with the combat as well since when you do take an immortals head their abilities manifest within you. Expect to be able to increase your strength, jumping ability and other things that will help you fight. The developers at Edios decided to take out the health meter and replace it with a fatigue meter. If you get exhausted in battle you will pass out and that will give the enemies an opportunity to take your head, so be ready to evade from combat to rest up a bit.

This game will be targeted for the Xbox 360, PC, and PS3 this coming May which is not a long wait at all. Try to keep your head on gamers because the quickening has begun once again. Stay frosty!
