Kinect Launch Titles: Kinectimals

Microsoft's new camera-based controller has sold 2.5 million units worldwide in its first month. Backed by a strong lineup of launch games, has enthusiastically embraced the new controller concept. But what game experiences are helping to move Kinect controllers at retail? In a series of posts, we will take a look at some of the more popular early games for the innovative new controller system. Today we turn our attention to Kinectimals, the cute and cuddly pet simulator.
In Kinectimals, players can use gestures to interact with virtual animals , via activities such as teaching tricks to the animal, guiding the animal around an obstacle course, and other games. At the beginning, players can choose between five well-known jungle cats: cheetah, lion, tiger, leopard, or panther. Later, you can unlock special creatures such as the sabre-toothed tiger and feisty bobcat.
Capitalizing on Kinect's controller-free approach, the title also tosses in some neat little touches, such as the ability to wipe the screen clean when your cub sneezes or breathes on it. There are enough different activities to keep kids engaged for a good amount of time, and they may even get some exercise in front the the TV without realizing it.
The minigames and activities in Kinectimals are anchored in a fantasy-themed story that unfolds on an exotic island. Early on, you're given a treasure map, left behind by Captain Able Blackwood. As you and your cub complete tasks, games, and challenges, you level up in an RPG-like system, unlocking new areas to explore on the island's map. Each unlocked location holds its own secrets, offering a constant incentive to progress.
