Capcom Announces Dead Rising 2

dead-rising-2-icon.jpg

Long Rumored to be in development, a sequel to Dead Rising was today officially announced by Capcom. The Japanese publisher confirmed that the title is under development by Canadian studio Blue Castle Games. Capcom head of research Keiji Inafune will be overseeing development of the game in Vancouver, Canada. The original title, released in 2006, has since sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide on the Xbox 360. A Wii port of the original game is also under development. Dead Rising 2 will release simultanously in 2009 for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC platforms.

According to the publisher, Dead Rising 2 will take the franchise to a whole new level of zombie-killing fun with tens of thousands of zombies, the all-new gambling paradise of Fortune City (read: Las Vegas) to explore and conquer plus a host of new in-game objects that can all be used as deadly weapons to stave off the zombie assault. The weapons were our favorite part of the first game, and we hope that Blue Castle are able to come up with some creative uses for objects one might find laying around in Las Vegas.

Dead Rising 2 is set several years after the infamous zombie invasion of Willamette. Unfortunately, the zombie virus was not contained at the conclusion of Dead Rising, spreading unchecked throughout the United States and Dead Rising 2 depicts a country where zombie outbreaks continue to strike.

We will have more information -- and hopefully some early screenshots -- as soon as we hear from Capcom.
