$299 Showdown: Xbox 360 Elite vs. PS3 Slim
This holiday, the two giants of current-generation gaming will battle head-to-head for budget consumers at a lower price point. Both the formidable PS3 and the ever-popular Xbox 360 Elite will be available for the price of $299 USD in the United States and 299 Euros in Europe. This is a fantastic bargain no matter which current-gen system you buy, but to help consumers who are still on the fence, we have broken down the feature list of each console for comparison.
With its new price tag and leaner form-factor, the PS3 Slim clearly offers great value. Unfortunately Sony had to strip Linux support, backwards compatibility, and some memory card ports in order to get the price down. But consumers still get a great gaming machine, free online support, and a competent Blu-Ray player. There are also some intriguing services unique to Sony such as Home and PSP connectivity, which might entice some users.

The Xbox 360 Elite, even with a price drop to $299, still struggles to compete feature-for-feature. The most glaring omission is the lack of on-board wifi adaptor. Microsoft currently sells its own, expensive adaptor as an extra accessory. If gamers want to go online using their Xbox 360, even to play online poker, they will have to pay for Xbox Live Gold, at a cost of around $49 per year. Silver members still get access to game demos, achievements, and Avatars, but little more. Finally, the Xbox 360 still relies on DVD disks for content, which is fine for games but may disappoint videophiles who want the HD capability of Blu-Ray movies. On the other hand, Microsoft is the only manufacturer to allow users to stream Netflix movies from their console, which is ultra-convenient. Zune users can also connect their devices to Xbox Live to access multimedia content.
Even though we are a fan site and obviously biased, we have to give the advantage to Sony in this case. The combination of a Blu-Ray player, solid online and a great lineup of upcoming games makes the PS3 a very tempting offer. We have to say that we are little bit worried about the cheap build quality of the new PS3, although build quality has never been one of Microsoft's strong points, either. If the Redmond giant wants to compete with Sony for attention from frugal gamers, they are going to have to make some changes to their product offering. We suggest dropping the subscription fee for Xbox Live (make it advertisement supported) and bundling a Wi-Fi adaptor in the box with the Xbox 360 Elite. That would be enough to level the playing field somewhat, but we suspect that in any case, Sony is still going to take a chunk out of Microsoft's market share this autumn.

i hope nobody buys the xbox any more because this so called 'price drop' is actually a price increase. in the uk they are increasing the price of the arcade console and the elite doesn't even come with a HDMI cable any more. microsoft are thieving c*nts.

Hello Fellow Gamers :). WTF!!!,.. no backward compatibility for X360. Dude you're totally wrong. I can play a lot of my old Xbox1 games on my X360 right now. Even the NEW ones can do that with a hard drive. You must not own one. Get your facts straight PLEASE.
Also when you join Xblive, the 1st month is free. You now get 13 months for $49 which equates to about $3.85 a month. Why didn't you mention the Cross game chat, Custom soundtrack for any game, etc.. ? HDMI cables can be purchased from $5 to about $100. Depends on where you buy it. We all know that Xblive is hands down the BEST of all 3. They have NOTHING that can currently compete with NetFlix. As far as watching Blu-Ray movies, I can watch Blu-ray movies on My X360. Just stream it directly to My system via network. No loss of quality.

Neither unit has some of those features in your comparison. That doesn't really do much to differentiate the two. Something you might have added is that the PS3 supports 7.1 surround and HD sound and codecs, for example. Another is LIVE's better integrated online gaming gaming features or the lack of a web browser for the 360.
One thing that I have found particularly frustrating as a 20 GB 360 owner is the high price of the 360's hard drives. I want to upgrade to a larger hard drive (ironically so I can buy more LIVE content from Microsoft), but I will not pay the ridiculous price they are asking. The PS3, by contrast, allows you to pick your own SATA HDD, which are quite cheap. You can also use flash drives and pick your own headset. I'd like to see Microsoft charge something similar to other HDDs on the market; their proprietary markup is outrageous.

Actually the Xbox 360 is backwards compatible. Not with all games, but with quite a lot.

I agree for the comment that a big chunk of the market share of Microsoft will be taken by Sony this autumn.
i really hate the way Microsoft as made their accessories so expensive. I don't care for their cross game chat nor Netflix or even custom soundtrack(don't have space on my stupid little 20Gb HDD)
I had a Xbox1, know i have a 360 and i only played 3 xbox1 games on the 360, oh we must not forget the very expensive Games On Demand.
-Since my brother offered me a PS3 i started to play online without a worry of payments or limitations.
-Buying games from everywhere online (no region locks).
-Took a 120Gb Hdd from a broken laptop and it worked on the console.
-Can use my logitech controller.
-Buy anything on PSN with actual money not like Microsoft Points (you know what your paying)
Someone that still defend Microsoft must be really stubborn or hates his money.

Why would anyone buy a piece of brick like the xbox. Honestly Microsoft is successful with the xbox cause they can trick you hillybilly inbreeds to buy their garbage. Their biggest accomplishment is stealing innovation.

PS3 also has the ability to install another operating system... although the down side it has to PPC compatible, ie Linux, good for DEVs, but not end users thickos.
imo x360 still wins, why do i need a browser? i have a PC!
the ability of personalising sound tracks, project natal, mgs, final fantasy, what more do you want?

in all honesty, i'm a huge 360 fan considering i have both systems. I just have simply used and preferred my 360 over time. BUT right now? The ps3 slim is a better deal. I'm trying to think of reasons why i'd still recommend to my friends the 360 over the ps3 and while it used to be fairly easy, now not so much. I mean, netflix, ... and maybe the xbox live party chat/system is the only thing i really have to go off of.(things anyone would care about...twitter/facebook are like HOME, neat, but not THAT neat)
And considering you'll be spending an extra 100 on a wifi adapter, PLUS another 50 on xboxlive, ... its just plain math, the ps3 slim is a 150$ save. I hope microsoft changes this b.c. it'll be hard to sway my friends to spend 150 more just so i can play with them.

Even with xbox 360's price drop it still isnt as good of a deal... Ps3 has blu-ray which is the STANDARD hd format, it has a full web browser built in, free wifi, and free online gaming. Now 360's live may be better than psn but its not 50$ a year better and that gap is closing especially in this economy. Now with a stellar line up of late 09 and 2010 games it is no contest. I have both systems so it doesnt matter to me too much but i only bought a 199$ arcade to play 360 exclusives, well i try too but my 360 has suffered RRoD 3 times now. My ps3 has Never failed on me. You get what you pay for, a ps3 is easily worth 400$ let alone 300$ the 360 is worth 200$ not 300$. Do yourself a favor and get a Ps3 and find you a used arcade 360 for 150$ or less.

Why would you need and x360? you have a pc? which is great for gaming! project natal will flop. mgs? LOL? ps3 much? final fantasy? ps3 much?

The final decision will be made by the consumer, at last the games and exclusives will decide what to choose.

It's good to see an Xbox Site give the thumbs up to Sony (PS3).
I am sorry but for a new gamer and any informed consumer, the PS3 just makes better sense. You get more for your money.
The only real down site to the PS3 is the Online Network. Is not as intergreate as XboxLive but it can be forgiven for that fact that it is FREEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im sorry but ps3 just owns xbox in every way. The machine is so device friendly i can transfer content to almost anything and copy almost anything. The web browser is awesome if you have a chatpad for faster typing. I download music from the web browser straight to my ps3 and then from my ps3 to my phone and vamo nos. I can even watch free porn on my 42 inch LCD using different sites (lubetube,tube8,pornhub, you name it) Home is getting better every week and the playstation eye can already do what natal does sony just needs to give it some updates through dlc. Xbox=fail sorry its just that way, and netflix streams movies fine on my ps3 using playon.

It's definitely a tough decision on which one to get. I have been researching as which one to get, I should just get both of them but I don't really game that often. I had both systems 2 years ago and sold em as I wasn't playing that often. Now its time to get back in. Decisions. Decisions. Leaning towards a PS3 though.

Hey guys, its a good comparison, but you forgot one BIG feature of PS3 - Sixaxis motion control. A ton of games use it (to a varied degree) and its quite fun.

Its Pretty Obvious that the PS3 Has More Features For the same Price.....the only thing that the 360 Beat Sony at is the Netflix Streaming Feature

Grow up people! This "my system is better than your system" argument has gotten way out of hand! NEITHER is perfect. They both have there good and bad points. If you prefer one over the other, fine.....doesn't mean you're opinion is a fact.
PS3 SUCKS
- August 28, 2009 12:23 AM
that's a joke...sony has crappy online & that's one place where the xbox has an advantage. Then you have the marketplace...the xbox blows the ps3 out of the water there. Sure we pay for our online but it's worth it cause of the benefeits we get. My 360 has lasted me for 4 1/2 years now & it's runnin great. The games lineup for the 360 look amazing for the rest of 2009 & for 2010.

HEY TEALSTEAMS..... you can play the same games on your pc that you play on the 360 but they are better in EVERY WAY ON THE PC YOU COMMENT MAKES NO SENCE!!! LOL
right....
- August 28, 2009 5:51 AM
to ps3 sucks.
have you ever had a ps3? there crappy online is not crappy at all in fact its stable. the PSN store has improved greatly. with you having a 360 for 4 1/2 years great your a lucky one i was on my 4th until i said fuck it. and right now ps3 has more exclusive games coming out that look very interesting. dont get me wrong i had a 360 but all that machine was a pain in the ass. halo 3, gears of war, fable and mass effect are great game. but ill take a ps3 over a 360 any day of the week now.

Yes, the Playstation 3's online is free, however I would rather pay my £34.99 (uk) per year for the quality of Xbox live than rely on the inferior Sony version that is free.
Xbox Live has say 3m subscribers, at roughly £34/$50. That makes Microsoft £102m/$150m per year. This money can go straight back in to improve the infrastructure, develop new features and generally make it a better experience. Sony has to either make that through anoying ads, or take money from another part of the Playstation revenue.
Personally Microsoft wins it for me for the ease of use of Live. So what it costs money, it's the price of 1 game after all.

just 1 problem.
all ps3s are backwards compatible with PS1 games.
and most of the best games were on ps1 like ridge racer, syphon filter, crash bandicoot, metal gear solid, gran turismo, pandemonium.
ha 50 bucks says no one remembers what the last game was, a complete classic.
i would sell both my nuts for another pandemonium game.

ay im just gonna come out straight sayin this ps3 is the better deal for wat u get but the 360 is also somewat good too!
for me the 360 is a good system just some flaws on it but a very good system and for the ps3 it is also very good but lacks some stuff as well. so no one can say if one of the systems are better until one of them are perfected and right now both arent...i would recomend the ps3 if u like amazin graphics and and i would recomend the 360 is u like amazing online multi player...if ur rich buy both u will surely be happy with both =D

I just bought a PS3 slim with my new sony playstation card which they are going to credit me $100 for buying PS3 slim for $299 = $199 final price... how can you beat that...
I was going to buy xbox360 for netflix, pc video streaming and perhaps occasionally gaming... but i hate to pay another $50/yr on top of netflix /mo fees :(
After a little research online, I found out that I can stream netflix from PC to PS3 using software.

Well I own a ps3 slim and it is really a great system. It includes blu-ray, free online, built in wifi, rechargeable controllers which are motion sensitive, replacable hard drive (used in laptops), great exclusives (resistance 1&2, killzone 2, uncharted 1&2 (2009 game of the year) and much more. However the 360 does have a slight advantage in online gaming but I still wouldn't spend $50 on it. The ps3 has a 40%. Sure Xbox Will fix it for free but is it worth going through all the hassle. It will take at least a month. The only problem my ps3 has is a cracking noise after I play for a while, I researched and it's nothing to worry about for those who have the same problem. It's just the plastic cover contracting as it cools off.
Buy the ps3 better, smarter choice
ps: netflix is now on ps3 so xbox has one less advantage.

ps3 has everthing the xbox 360 has except in game chat but that is coming soon to the psn this summer then microsoft is in some deep water they will be bowing down to sony. mabby what happend to the first gaming system will happen to the xbox 360 it will be pulled off the shelf and burn becuase you know what the sony syteams are always the way to go. back when i was 7 i that the n64 was the best system in reality it was but when the new system came out i whent to sony because they are the best.
